Marc Chagall's illustrations for the story "Odyssey" are a tribute to Homer's epic. Chagall himself visited Greece twice and was greatly inspired by ancient mythological motifs during his travels.
In Greek mythology, Tityos is a giant, son of Zeus and Elara; he is the father of Europa. To protect her from the jealousy of Hera, Zeus's wife and goddess of marriage, Zeus hides Elara underground, where she gives birth. For this reason, Tityos is sometimes considered a son of Gaia.
